Analyzing DE&I

Thank you to the CDO Board members who were able to join our May meeting. We welcomed new Board members Nancy Di Dia, Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, Executive Director DICE (Diversity, Inclusion, Culture & Equity) at Boehringer Ingelheim USA Corporation and Maria Medrano, Head of Global Diversity, Narrative & Public Policy at Google. We also recognized and gave a huge shoutout to all CDO Board members who provided expertise and support to member colleagues and i4cp’s research team.

We were joined in our main discussion by Patti Phillips, Board Chair for i4cp’s People Analytics Board and some of the respective members of the PA Board. Michael Manning, VP and Head of Talent Management Operations at T. Rowe Price kicked off the meeting with a very informative presentation on projective modeling and analytics to shape future workforce. He shared a few “how to’s”:

  • Modeling future impacts of departure & hiring trends on workforce segments
  • Quantifying which variables have the largest impact on the future workforce
  • Understanding ranges of possible outcomes

Our discussion also highlighted that you don’t win at diversity by hiring more, but by holding on better. We all agreed that it is best to ensure:

  • Portfolio approach that keeps goals at a high level and uses percentages vs. count, as this accommodates goal attainment through both attraction and retention.
  • Blend of trusted data (have this ready), scenarios, and educated business judgement (several trusted data sources were discussed)
  • Terms like “goals, objectives, or aspirations” vs “targets” to mitigate legal issues

We continued a robust discussion and offered contributions toward:

  1. What DE&I metrics are you focused on?
  2. How are you setting goals – particularly global goals? (This topic branched into: What barriers/challenges are their with legal compliance in certain regions and how do you overcome them? And how do you encourage self-identification in those regions?)
  3. What are you making available and to whom?

After our break, we came back in the second hour with a 15 minute breakout session where groups discussed leadership accountability. What challenges do you have with leadership accountability and how can you, or have you, used metrics to overcome them?

We ended the call with our typical Wrap up and Reminders.

Our next virtual meeting will include members of all i4cp Boards on June 8th. Amy Coleman, Corporate Vice President, Human Resources & Corporate Functions, Microsoft will discuss the company’s hybrid work strategy. Please let us know if you’d like to add an agenda item for a future a meeting.
