Performance Management, Talent Development and Learning
We welcomed back PME alumna Alan Colquitt, Ph.D., Director Global Assessment, OE and Workforce Research at Eli Lilly and Company.
The topic was Performance Management, Talent Development and Learning. The session challenged our basic assumptions as Dr. Colquitt provided us with a focus on “Progress,” and a foundation in science and “the evidence.” We discussed why more coaching, feedback and performance conversations may not get you where you want to go.
Here’s a description of Alan’s upcoming book.
Despite consensus on the ineffectiveness of PM 1.0 (i.e., traditional practices), there are powerful forces holding it in place. Information on rigorous, evidence-based recommendations is crowded out by benchmarking information, case studies of high-profile companies, and other propaganda coming from HR consultants. Business leaders and HR professionals learn about common practices not effective practices. (Dr. Colquitt) confronts the traditional dogma, paradigms, and practices of PM 1.0 and holds them up to the bright light of scientific scrutiny. (His book) encourages HR professionals and business leaders to abandon PM 1.0 and it offers up a more appropriate purpose for PM, alternative paradigms to guide them and practical solutions that are better supported by scientific research, referred to as “Next Generation Performance Management” or PM 2.0 for short.
