Leadership Behaviors Update

Thank you for a great meeting of the Executive Development Exchange!!

I hope those of you who joined us this week enjoyed as much as I did the presentations, interaction and chats about emerging leader behaviors and developmental practices that are making a difference in their companies.

I was intrigued by the consistent comments and reinforcement by several members of the importance of “Intentionality” in leader development practices when designing ways to develop specific behaviors. This intension was as important in the design of the development practice(s) as it was in the communication and inclusion of the desired behaviors and specific applications in other talent practices.

Members shared different ways that they were modifying their development practices to order to focus on new required behaviors, and ways these behaviors were being integrated and reinforced in other talent practices, i.e.: 360’s, employee engagement surveys, performance management, internal selections, succession management, etc. While this multi-practice emphasis isn’t new, what was interesting to learn was how it was being applied in this new virtual world.

Thanks to Tom Stone and Kari Naimon from the i4cp Research Team who presented the latest developments in i4cp’s continuing examination of Leadership Redefined!  Tom shared insights about leader behaviors that strongly correlated with Improved Culture and Strengthened Purpose. It wasn’t a big surprise to the Development Leaders on the call that Talent Developer was one of those behaviors. The other was Boundaryless Leader!

Kari gave us a preliminary view of the leader behaviors that have an impact on DE&I.  Kari will be presenting more insights on this topic in the Developing Diverse Leaders for Tomorrow” presentation, the theme of our May 19th EDE meeting.  I’m sure that meeting will draw a lot of interest and engagement with our members so be sure to sign up now.

A very special thanks to Karen Paul, Mike Kessler and Kevin Wilde – the EDE Steering Committee who also served as an executive panel sharing their perceptions and experiences of how new research on leader behaviors and competencies have been integrated into their Top-Talent Practices. I really appreciated their sharing of stories and applications from other experiences throughout their careers.

The deck from the session can be found in the downloads in the right column.  Just a reminder that the content of this deck is intended for use by members of the EDE only and should not be shared with anyone outside of your organization.

Also, a brief reminder to add your questions or comments on the EDE Discussions page. This is an excellent opportunity to get your questions answered by other peer developmental professionals and to build your personal professional network!

Thank you again – and we look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on May 19th!
