CHRO Board In-Person Meeting: Future of Work

We had a fruitful discussion on several topics during our October in-person meeting at BNSF Railways in Fort Worth, Texas. A big shout out to Judy Carter and her team for hosting us at their amazing campus! Though in-person attendance was less than usual, those who did attend (in-person and virtually) enjoyed robust discussion, practice sharing, and ideation; (and we also received an autographed copy of Tim Mulligan’s latest book, “A Perfect 10”!).

For your reference and to share with your teams, below is a summary of what we discussed and what is next. All materials from the meeting, including the recording, can be accessed here:

Sustainability and ESG:

  • Colby Tanner Group Vice President, Industrial Products at BNSF spoke about its economic impact on the communities in which it operates.
  • John Lovenburg Vice President, Environment & Sustainability at BNSF talked about BNSF’s commitment to the environment and to sustainability.
  • Katie Fleming, Director of Corporate Planning, Sustainability & ESG at Black Hills Energy discussed how ESG is anchored in the company’s strategy.

What Boards, Senior Leaders and Stakeholders are asking from HR (an open discussion):

  • Top of mind is Future of Work and its implications on culture, talent/workforce, as well as strategy execution.  Other key themes included - changing the perception of how the company is contributing to ESG/Sustainability, thinking of the office as a destination not an obligation, what does connectedness mean to our organization, pay transparency/equity, a leadership decision making framework on a virtual meeting, and developing next-generation leaders.

Where CHROs are placing their bets in 2023 and what’s next for HR?

  • We finished with a discussion on where our Board members will be placing their bets in the year ahead and what the group predicts are the changes and challenges ahead for the HR discipline/function.

Next up - Our final virtual Board meeting of 2022 is on December 8th from 10am – 11:30am PT where we will be reviewing the 2023 top priorities topics and asking for your input on research topics you would like i4cp to study in the year ahead.

As always, any questions or feedback on our meetings and how to continuously improve them would be appreciated.
