Collaboration & Network Analysis

We had an engaging discussion at our meeting on Collaboration & Network Analysis. Carol Morrison – i4cp Senior Research Analyst, and the leading i4cp researcher working with Rob Cross on this project, lead the discussion reviewing some of the preliminary findings, and also facilitated the discussion on some of the questions she is using in interviews on the topic.

Some Highlights of the discussion included:

Four key elements of collaboration were identified in our collaboration research that highly correlated with market performance and collaboration effectiveness:

·       Culture

·       Leadership

·       Work Management

·       Talent Management

Clearly and consistently defining collaboration in your competency framework was identified early as an important element to effectively identifying, assessing, developing, and systemically infusing collaboration into your company’s culture.

High performing companies were more than 4x more likely to build, influence and encourage their leaders to extend their networks across organizational departments and beyond the enterprise.

We also answered some of the questions Carol is using in her interviews on collaborative networks:

Question 1: Do your leaders actively help others build effective networks?

Members were equally divided across Yes, No, Considering it.

Those that are using collaboration have it as part of their competency framework and have linked it to innovation & critical business drivers.

Question 2: Do your leadership development programs include instruction in ways that leaders can encourage others to collaborate?

71% of the members do not include instruction or focus development on collaboration.

While collaboration is viewed as valuable & important, it has not yet evolved in development programs or practices.

Finally we had a very interesting discussion involving how collaboration differs with individual vs. teams. Members were very interested in learning more about how high performing companies are developing and recognizing collaboration with teams, and how individuals within teams are recognized for their contributions vs. the recognition of the team as a unit.
