Keys to Governing the Measurement of Leader Development
Are you able to demonstrate how your organization’s leader development programs help drive business performance?
High-performance organizations consistently do this with accuracy and the trust of their officers and boards. Members of i4cp’s Executive & Leader Development Exchange discussed how to achieve this in our July 20 th virtual-meeting.

- Keys to Governing the Measurement of Leader Development
Executive committees and boards of directors are increasingly asking for more detailed information on the REAL success of practices used to prepare the future leaders of the organization. High-performance organizations respond to this demand by going well beyond common measures such as Smile Sheets and numbers of completed courses as evidence of successful training. HPOs establish alignment with business measures to identify the value of the learning and ultimately, impact on the business. This is where the focus needs to be. A few key takeaways:
- HPOs are identifying data that demonstrate how L&D programs are developing the behaviors needed by leaders for current and future business requirements.
- Senior leaders and boards of directors want Data Visualization – graphics, scorecards, dashboards, etc . (like those listed and linked below) – that tell the talent story.
- Governance helps shape the value of analytics in an organization, and increases the trust and use of learning metrics in business decisions.
- Involvement of senior leaders to govern the L&D process by participating in a Leadership Development Council is highly correlated with business performance.
In August, Exchange discussions will focus on how to build efficiency metrics that are critical to ensuring cost effectiveness for each of the talent practices, and serve as an important foundation for additional measures of success. It’s not a question of which is more important—efficiency, effectiveness, or impact— all must be measured and used together.
