How to prevent a focus on diversity of thought from becoming an excuse for not achieving demographic diversity
The guest speaker at our July meeting was Inga Carboni. Inga is an award-winning instructor and Fulbright scholar recipient. Inga has been developing leaders for many years through executive education, graduate and undergraduate courses, and academic writings. Her teaching and research interests include leadership, diversity and inclusion, and networks and networking. Her work has appeared in numerous journals and books, such as Human Resource Management, Group Dynamics, European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, and the Journal of Management Education. Currently an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Raymond A. Mason School of Business at the College of William and Mary, she received her Ph.D. in Organization Studies from Boston College, M.A. in Social Psychology from Boston College, and M.A. in History from Tufts University.
Inga's 20-minute talk focused on how a pursuit of "Diversity of Thought," does not replace pursuing demographic, gender and other forms of diversity but is actually inseparably tied to these traditional efforts. This is a timely topic that has surfaced as a result of some of the challenges many of you face that you've shared with me.
All my best,
Joe
