  • How IT staffing assignments differ from other categories

    Remote work for contingents remains popular in IT staffing. New SIA research based on a survey of staffing buyers found that 60% of buyers using IT skill sets reported their contingents are working remotely. That compared to only 4% of contingents at buyers using industrial skill sets. IT staffing assignments also tend to be longer, with 36% of buyers reporting assignment lengths of 18 to 24 months. SIA Senior Research Analyst Curtis Starkey comments on IT staffing buyer trends in a story in this week’s issue of the IT Staffing Report newsletter.

  • Kelly Services to buy Motion Recruitment Partners in historic deal

    Kelly Services today announced it will buy Massachusetts-based Motion Recruitment Partners (MRP) from private investment firm Littlejohn & Co. The acquisition will be the largest in Kelly’s history.  “I’ve been pretty clear since becoming CEO that our growth strategy is (not only) growing organically…but also adding to the portfolio with inorganic or M&A activity,” said Kelly President and Chief Executive Officer Peter Quigley in an interview with Staffing Industry Analysts. “This acquisition is consistent with this strategy.”  Under terms of the deal, Kelly will acquire MRP for $425 million in cash to be paid at close, with additional earnout potential of up to $60 million based on certain performance criteria.  The transaction is expected to close in the …

  • Insight Global to pay $2.7 million in whistleblower lawsuit

    Staffing company Insight Global LLC agreed to pay $2.7 million related to allegations in a whistleblower lawsuit that it didn’t implement adequate cybersecurity measures during the Covid-19 pandemic, the US Department of Justice announced May 1.The Atlanta-based company, which had a contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to provide staffing for Covid-19 contact tracing, did not adequately keep the personal health information of contract tracing subjects confidential and secure, according to the Department of Justice.The whistleblower in this instance, Terralyn Williams Seilkop, will receive a $499,500 share of the settlement.Seilkop, who lives in Florida, formerly worked as Insight Global’s business intelligence reporting manager on the project as an independent contractor, ac …

  • Upwork Q1 revenue up 18.8% with boost from flat-fee pricing

    Upwork Inc. (NASDAQ: UPWK) reported first-quarter revenue rose 18.7% to $190.9 million. Gross margin at the world’s largest talent platform also improved, and net income rose 7.4%.“We continue to accelerate profitability while investing in growth and innovation,” President and CEO Hayden Brown said in a press release.Revenue growth was driven, in part, by the final transition to the company’s new flat-fee pricing structure that was introduced last year, CFO Erica Gessert said in a conference call with analysts.Upwork’s gross services volume — the total amount that clients spend on Upwork’s offerings as well as additional fees to talent and clients for other services — rose 1% to nearly $1.01 billion.Its marketplace take rate rose to 17.7% in the first quarter from 14.7% in the first quarte …

  • PostNL could face €24 million labour misclassification fine in Belgium

    The Public Prosecution Service in Belgium has recommended a fine of €24.4 million against the Belgian branch of PostNL, reports the NLTimes. The prosecutor alleged that two units within the company, PostNL Cargo and PostNL Packages, have used staff from a third party in an unlawful way. Employees of other companies were called upon, but PostNL had the most authority over them. Depots owned by PostNL Belgium were raided in connection with Belgian authorities' investigation into the company's alleged missteps.   • Female presenters lose equal pay claim in legal challenge against BBC

    Four senior BBC journalists have failed in their bid to include equal pay as part of wider legal action against the broadcaster, reports The Independent. Martine Croxall, Karin Giannone, Kasia Madera and Annita McVeigh launched the claim against the BBC, accusing the broadcaster of a “sham recruitment exercise”. The presenters, all between the ages of 48 and 55, claim they were snubbed for chief presenter roles following the merger of the BBC’s News and World News channels. Their claim says they failed to land top anchor roles due to a recruitment exercise “rigged” in favour of certain senior presenters before applications opened.This is a claim that the broadcaster vehemently denies, and the BBC says it has conducted an internal review into the matter.   • Spain-based digital staffing platform Job&Talent appointed Brian Neely as its chief sales officer in the US, charged with overseeing and expanding its sales team. Neely was previously executive VP of sales at Palmetto, a clean energy marketplace. He also formerly served at Randstad USA in a senior VP position as well as at Snagajob, where he served as director of staffing services. Neely cited Job&Talent’s tech platform as a reason for joining the company.   • Most APAC employers embrace AI adoption

    The majority of employers in the Asia Pacific region (80%) are currently using AI or considering it, according to the PersolKelly 2024 Workforce Insights Report.The report found that 20% of employers have no plans for AI adoption.In terms of current workplace AI usage, New Zealand leads the way with a rate of 82%, almost double the Asia Pacific average of 43%. Singapore stands at 45% while Australia is at 35% for comparison.Despite high expected spending on AI, both Australia and South Korea showed some of the lowest AI adoption rates. In Australia, AI spending is mainly concentrated in the finance sector, leading to slower adoption across other industries.     The global economy is continuing growing at a modest pace, according to the latest Economic Outlook from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.The Economic Outlook projects steady global GDP (gross domestic product) growth of 3.1% in 2024, the same as the 3.1% in 2023, followed by a slight pick-up to 3.2% in 2025.The impact of tight monetary conditions continues being felt, particularly in housing and credit markets, but global activity is proving relatively resilient, the decline in inflation continues, and private sector confidence is improving, the Outlook noted.Headline inflation in the OECD is projected to gradually ease from 6.9% in 2023 to 5.0% in 2024 and 3.4% in 2025, helped by tight monetary policy and fading goods and energy price pressures.     Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. ordered a review of regional minimum wage rates.Marcos directed the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) to review the minimum wage rates in their respective regions.     More than 70% of the global workforce is likely to be exposed to climate-change-related health hazards, and existing occupational safety and health (OSH) protections are struggling to keep up with the resulting risks, according to a new report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).The ILO’s report, ‘Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate’, says that climate change is already having a serious impact on the safety and health of workers in all regions of the world.Estimates by the ILO showed that more than 2.4 billion workers (out of a global workforce of 3.4 billion) are likely to be exposed to excessive heat at some point during their work, according to the most recent figures available (2020).     Event: The March Employment Situation, released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), indicates that total nonfarm employment rose by +303,000 in March on a seasonally adjusted basis, while temporary help services employment declined by -1,300 jobs. The temporary agency penetration rate was 1.74% in, down from a revised February rate of 1.75%. The national unemployment rate declined to 3.8%, from 3.9%.Employment expanded in most industry groups. The group with the largest gain was again Health and social assistance, which added +81,300 jobs; followed by Government, which added +71,000 jobs; and Leisure and hospitality, which added 49,000 jobs. Among staff giving their firm a net promoter “likelihood to recommend” satisfaction score of 0-4, the share saying they were open to quitting was 100%; that share declined with subsequent score increments, and above a score of 7 the share open to quitting was less than 10%. What drives staff satisfaction? Staff repeatedly emphasize two factors.
